sharpening ceramic knives - the teaser

We have a Kyocera ceramic knife in the kitchen. It was a gift from Krampus from a better time. Anyway, it's nicked and dull and wants a dressing and sharpening of the edge. This service is available from Kyocera for something like $20 - $30 for 1 to 10 knives or something like that. I haven't checked it in a while. You can also buy a Kyocera diamond wheel sharpener for $35 - $100 (for the discontinued high end model). I learned that the diamond grit size on their sharpening wheel is 1500 grit.

It occurred to me that I could probably buy a 1500 grit diamond belt for my belt sander.  I looked around, and sure enough, there it was, 1" wide, 42" circumference, 1500 grit diamond... only $385. Okay.

What else is harder than aluminum oxide? (which is what the knife ceramic is made from) Well it's certainly not more aluminum oxide, and guess what most abrasive belts are made from? Aluminum oxide.

Oh hey, silicon carbide is significantly harder than alumina, although not as hard as diamond.  I wonder what a silicon carbide belt costs?  $4.

Right then, we're gonna try this.  I'll let you know when I've ordered same (and some other stuff, I've got an order saved at McMaster-Carr, but I'm waiting for a check to come in first as we are not exactly neck-deep in cash right now... :(
