I have this habit of moving things like a 2,000 pound milling machine or a 1,500 pound “bench” lathe around my shop, alone. Friends who visit regularly have commented more than once, “wait, wasn’t the mill... over there, last time I was here?” And many did not believe it was possible or wondered how it was possible to do safely and without muscle strains or mad strength (I’m tall and slender).
Well, just like Mr. Leedskalnin, I used tools and leverage. “Give me a place to stand...“
It’s not for nothing, because it’s not actually any fun at all, so it was never as if I just was in the mood for some senseless change...
This time, it was to make room in the shop for my new tool box, which is roughly the same width and depth as the lathe, and unfortunately, it needed to go where the lathe was. I gnashed my teeth and bit my fingernails for a week, spinning around in my shop looking for alternative plans before I decided to do it again.
I fervently hope this is the last time I move my “cast iron teddy bears” until we sell our current home and move to the mountains.
Yes, one of the things which has hampered our ability to find a property we like -- aside from more important factors like price and location -- has been that it either has to have either an out-building or garages sufficient to house two vehicles in the winter AND house my entire, not-small, shop, OR the property has to have sufficient real estate on already-flat and leveled ground for a shop to be built.
Yes, it is positively deranged to expect to move machine tools up a probably-steep mountain driveway to create a metal shop / job shop in a small mountain community... but I’m damned well going to do it anyway. It is possible that I am, in fact, quite deranged.
