No. Gears.

  If I ever need gears for a project I'll either buy a finished gearbox somehow or cannibalize them from some other mechanism.  Fuque making gears! Why?

 To make real gears that will hold up for a while and won't grind the brass or cast iron or whatever into dust, you must first make an involute cutter for the size of gear teeth you want to cut.  That's not horribly complicated if you have a mill (I do), a "spindexer" (I don't), and... an involute cutter cutter.

 Ohhhh, okay, and to make that involute cutter cutter, you just need a heat treat oven and a surface grinder...

 See what I mean?!?  Fark a bunch of making gears!
