The simplest - and most honest - way to answer the question, "What is spin?" is simply to point at Dirac's equations and shrug.
You don't understand spin? Relax. Nobody understands spin, okay? If you can hang onto the angular momentum concept, that's good enough for anyone not actively dancing on the edge of human knowledge with a chalkboard.
